South African Airways (SAA) has issued a cautionary note to the travel trade, highlighting the imminent implementation of the Biometric Movement Control Systems (BMCS) by the South African Border Management Authority (BMA) and Department of Home Affairs.

The BMCS, set to be operational at all ports of entry by 30 September 2024, is scheduled to roll out at OR Tambo International Airport this week (August 19-23).

The new system, designed to enhance security through biometric verification, is expected to increase processing times at immigration and emigration points. This could lead to longer queues during peak periods, potentially impacting baggage collection for international arrivals and causing passengers to miss connecting flights.

In response, SAA is urging passengers to check in early and proceed through security well in advance, allowing ample time to navigate the extended immigration processes. This precaution aims to mitigate the risk of delays as the new system is introduced.
